There is something intoxicating about the roar of the engine after you turn the key to fire up your new (or classic) Ford Mustang. The Mustang is and has almost always been one of the most highly coveted cars of its class. Named for the P-51 Mustang WWII fighter plane, this archetypal vehicle has always done its best to live up to its jet-powered namesake.
Mustangs are a favorite for sports car fans and common drivers alike and are one of only 10 models that have had more than 50 years of solid production. That’s right: Since its debut in 1964/65, there has been a new Mustang model every single year, and it’s still going strong into the 2016 production year.
The first run of this car model was completely bought out before the 1965 production year even started! The Ford Mustang single-handedly created the ‘pony car’ class of cars and shaped the automobile industry as we see it today.
This model was the pioneer of many performance aspects that we may take for granted today. Some engineers even considered adding a type of independent rear suspension for the Mustang when the car first premiered. For reference, that particular type of suspension didn’t become common until the introduction of the MacPherson Strut in the late 1970s!
In light of the release of the new 2016 Mustang that has car enthusiasts chomping at the bit for a test drive, we’ve collected a list of the 10 sexiest Mustangs of all time, including a couple of named beauties that you may recognize from your favorite movies.
10. The 80s-90s Coupe
The Mustang Coupe that was popular from 1979 to 1993 or so is still one of the most easily recognized models Mustang ever produced. Coming equipped with either an economical 4-cylinder or a less-economical but much more fun 5.0L 8-cylinder engine, the Fox-platform coupes were a delightful mash-up of form and functionality.
The only drawback to these almost perfect specimens was the same problem all 4-seater coupes run into: having to lean the front seat forward to access the back seats. Other than that, it was an amazing piece of engineering that may have been a little bit ahead of its time and the perfect way to launch this list of sexy Mustangs.
